Membership

Becoming a member makes a difference to the community, it saves you space, and it saves you money. You will be in the company of fellow makers and volunteers that are sharing, learning, building, and creating a better, more sustainable Penicuik.  Members pay for an annual membership and then all loans are free (though we do charge a late fee for items that aren’t returned on time).

Members of the library can also request to become members of the Penicuik Community Development Trust free of charge.

Please get in touch for a conversation if you have other queries.

Who can be a member?

To become a member, you must:

  1. be aged 18 or over. We regret Junior/child memberships are not currently available.
  2. give us your address and contact details and date of birth.
  3. Confirm your email address so that we can contact you
  4. Live in Penicuik or no further than 15 miles from Penicuik

All members must also accept the PLoTs Member Agreement and Library Use Policy.

If you do not have an email address, we may be able to assist in giving you membership.  Please get in touch to discuss this with us.

Membership Options:

Membership is open to any resident of Penicuik or the surrounding area who is over the age of 18, and you can join online or in person at the Pen-y-coe Press.

All of our members hold full membership of the library, but we have a price structure that we hope will allow everybody in the community to be included should they wish to:

Standard Membership
£15.00 per year

This is the fee we expect most of our members to pay for membership – unless individuals qualify for concession membership or wish to purchase a Pay it forward membership.

Concession Membership
£10.00 per year

We offer membership at concession price to regular volunteers, people in full-time education and people receiving benefits.

The Library reserves the right to request evidence that you are eligible for concession price for the reasons above.  If you wish to pay the concession fee for other reasons, please contact us to check with us before you purchase your membership

Pay-it-forward Membership
£30.00 per year

The Pay it Forward option is buying a Standard Membership for yourself plus another one as a gift for someone else. You can tell us who it is for, or it can be put into a fund used for those who might otherwise struggle to afford to join PLoTs.

Please note that if we do not hear from you about who the paid forward membership is for, it will be added to our fund to use at our discretion.

Would you like to join but need help with the membership fee?  PLoTs is for everyone so get in touch with us and we can help using a membership from the pay-it-forward scheme.

How to Join:

Joining is easy.  All you need is an email address, a photo ID, and a proof of address.  (If you don’t have any of these, come and see us!)

You can sign up online, or come and see us and we do it for you.  A how-to guide on signing up for membership will lead you through the process.
